At the age of sixteen, he was expelled from school for organizing a gambling syndicate. After that, Gemmell went on to work as a day laborer, a lorry driver mate, and a nightclub bouncer before becoming a journalist.
He worked as a journalist for a several local newspaper in the east Sussex and finishing by becoming editor-in-chief for five them.
Also, freelance as a stringer he worked for the Daily mail, Daily express and Daily mirror national newspapers. Gemmell married twice he was the father of two children produced from his first marriage to Valerie. He died in Hastings on the south-east coast of England where was his home with his second wife Stella. It was on 28 July when, four days before his 58th birthday, Stella Gammell found him dead in his desk. Writing Fantasy was not the first choice of David Gammelle, originally he was intended to be historical novelist, but citing the grisly fate of William Wallace in the battle of the Alamo he was intrigued by the events as they ended badly for the protagonist.
Declaring he would make Scottish revolutionary victorious if he had written about the 13th century, he realised eventually that this world would be only possible in fantasy setting. The author also affirms that a major influence of his work were classic western movies, this can be detected in one of his books when some characters enters a mystical world akin to the native American spirit world. This is evidenced in the sequel to Ravenheart, Stormrider at the end of the book. More than that, in the first two books in the Rganteseries, sword in the storm and Midnight Falcon, where the main character is pugilist we can follow the traces of John Wayne movies Actually the author was being diagnosed with cancer he believed to be terminal in what drove him to write The Siege of Dros Denloch hoping that would take his mind off his illness and more important, to realise his ambition of having a novel published before he died.
Later, when he learned that he had suffered of misdiagnosis the novel was set to one side until The bestseller author was writing a final novel at the time of his death, completing a 70, words about an alternative-history trilogy for the legend of siege od Troy. Another famous book of the author is waylander, the novel was published in was the first of a trilogy, three waylander stories and was followed by waylande II: In the realm of the world and wayland III: Hero in the shadows. It talks the story of waylande an assassin who is doomed to travel the world in search of revenge against those who killed his family. Allaying a fellow assassin, a priest and a young mother, waylander tries to save the kingdom and in his long journey he gradually redeems himself.
